When will REI open an outdoor camping and hiking store in SLO CA?

REI Co-op confirmed on Tuesday that it will be opening a store in San Luis Obispo, according to a press release from the company.

The camping and outdoor recreation chain said in a statement that it will open the 22,000-square-foot store at SLO Promenade in the fall of 2019. An exact date has not been given.

“Close to the California coast and the Los Padres National Forest, San Luis Obispo is a thriving outdoor center,” said Greg Mellinger, REI’s retail director for California and Nevada, in the release. . “We are thrilled to finally join San Luis Obispo and further connect our members to the incredible outdoor opportunities this community has to offer.”

Until Tuesday, REI had been quiet about its plans for months.

In October 2018, a city official told The Tribune that REI had applied for a building permit to open a store in a renovated space on the SLO promenade.

In March, building permits were approved and construction was underway at 313 Madonna Road, Suite B.

REI’s name also appeared in town planning documents dated June 13, 2017 and reviewed by the city’s Architectural Review Board on July 17, 2017.

The documents showed concepts for the ongoing renovation of the plaza’s SLO promenade, indicating that REI had long been considering retail space adjacent to Sprouts Farmers Market in the mall. Sprouts opened in early April.

According to Tuesday’s press release, REI’s San Luis Obispo site will offer outdoor equipment and rentals, workshops and “guided outdoor experiences to connect people to an outdoor life.”
