Plan your next adventure: tips and ideas for winter outdoor activities

Colorado is known for its beautiful scenery. The first snowflakes of winter are coming soon, marking the start of an adventurous outdoor season. We’ve compiled a list of activities to help you prepare and plan.
Rent equipment on campus
Winter adventures are anything but ordinary and require a few extra precautions. The Student Wellness Center is home to the Adventure Rental Center, where CU Denver students, faculty / staff, and community members can rent outdoor equipment for any adventure.
Rental equipment includes tents, camping chairs, protective cushions, pans, jackets, sleeping bags, etc. Rental periods are one to two days, three to four days or five to eight days. Learn more about the rates here.
Prepare for winter
The weather is getting colder quickly and the snow will hopefully be plentiful in the mountains soon. This does not mean that the adventures have to stop. It’s time to stack the layers. Below are some tips from students on how to be extra careful for winter adventures, be it skiing, snowshoeing, fishing, or any other activity.
- Prevention is the key. Be sure to check the weather and temperatures before you go.
- When you venture outside, prioritize function over fashion.
- Always try to bring someone with you, especially if you are a beginner. If this is a solo trip, make sure someone is always aware of your location.
Choose your own adventure – Events organized by the Student Wellness Center
Fall vacation exploration: Looking to get out during the fall break? Explore the beautiful mountains, rivers and trails of Colorado. This trip is a series of day trips. Activities include rock climbing, hiking and snowshoeing and will end with a group picnic. When: November 20-22.
Snowshoe hike: Colorado’s trails are quite a spectacle in the snow. If you are new to snowshoeing, the guides will help you from start to finish. When: December 4, 8 a.m.
Recommended ski areas for “students”
Breckenridge receives some of the best snows in Colorado and generally ranks as the most visited ski resort in the United States. *Pass prices increase on November 21.
Silverton home to Colorado’s steepest and tallest mountain. It is a perfect place for experienced skiers to get an adrenaline rush.
Wolf creek is located in Pagosa Springs. It’s another budget mountain with nine lifts and some of Colorado’s deepest snows.
Telluride welcomes skiers of all ages and experiences. Its terrain poses friendly and difficult challenges for every ability. With its trails, ski lifts and acres, it is also home to a lively ski town accessible by cable car from the mountain.
