It is a city that has inspired many texts, and both its physical fabric and symbolic nature have been reworked and rethought by archaeologists, historians, and literary critics alike. For the ancients, &lsquo;Rome&rsquo; took on meaning not just from its concrete monuments, but also from the literary motifs and symbols it evoked. In this class, we will consider how Rome is used as both a setting and inspiration for Latin poetry, and consider how poets both represented and created an image of &lsquo;Rome&rsquo;.<\/p>\n\n \n <p><em>Not offered in 2024-25<\/em><\/p>\n <\/div>\n <div class=\"courseMetaWrapper\">\n <ul class=\"courseMeta\">\n <li class=\"courseMeta--credits\">\n <label>Credits:<\/label>\n <span>\n 6\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n <li class=\"courseMeta--liberalArtsReqs\">\n <label>Liberal Arts Requirements:<\/label>\n <span>\n <a href=\"\/catalog\/search\/?requirement[]=LAR: LA, Literary\/Artistic Analysis\"\n class=\"courseTag\">LA, Literary\/Artistic Analysis<\/a>\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n <li class=\"courseMeta--tags\">\n <label>Tags:<\/label>\n <span>\n <a href=\"\/catalog\/search\/?tag[]=CL: 100 level&include=all\"\n class=\"courseTag\">CL: 100 level<\/a>\n <a href=\"\/catalog\/search\/?tag[]=CLAS Core&include=all\"\n class=\"courseTag\">CLAS Core<\/a>\n <a href=\"\/catalog\/search\/?tag[]=CLAS Literary Analysis&include=all\"\n class=\"courseTag\">CLAS Literary Analysis<\/a>\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n \n <\/ul>\n <\/div>\n \n <\/li>\n <\/ul>\n<script>\njQuery(function (jq) {\n\tsetTimeout(function () {\n\t\tjq('.replaceModaal').on('click', function (e) {\n\t\t\te.preventDefault(e);\n\t\t\tjq.ajax({\n\t\t\t\turl: jq(this).data('ajax-href'),\n\t\t\t\ttype: 'GET',\n\t\t\t\t\/\/ dataType: 'json',\n\t\t\t\tsuccess: function (data) {\n\t\t\t\t\tjq('.modaal-content-container').html(data);\n\t\t\t\t},\n\t\t\t\terror: function (request, error) {\n\t\t\t\t\tconsole.error(`Request:`, request, error);\n\t\t\t\t\tjq('.modaal-content-container').html('<em style=\"color: darkred;\">an error occurred<\/em>');\n\t\t\t\t},\n\t\t\t});\n\t\t});\n\t}, 500);\n});\n<\/script>"
